PS3 and DIY USB adapter, Start but does not respond to input

I've gone through the process listed here http://gimx.fr/wiki/index.php?title=DIY_USB_adapter and here http://gimx.fr/wiki/index.php?title=DIY ... or_dummies a couple of times now to make sure I didn't miss anything. I've run the Arduino serial validation test and that has passed but, when I connect this all up to my slim ps3 the system fails to respond. Originally I would hit start. a console window would open then quickly close, I solved that by swapping the txd and rxd. I know the serial adapter is not quite as pictured but, I found another post on here stating that it should work. Now when I hit start the gui will come up, I can hit the mapped keys and move the mouse and it will respond showing input but, there is no response from the ps3 system. The adapter is recognized on com port 3 on my computer and by the gimx software.

The only thing I can think at this point that might be an issue is I'm trying to use the ps3 mini usb charging cable since I bought a micro one by accident, is there something special about those that might cause this not to work? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide and let me know if there's any other information you need.
