Recommended Distro etc.

Post by sephirotdnf »

Hello Matlo and others.
After I got BF3 on PS+ I decided to get back to GIMX :D
I've done some preparations:

Hardware:
- fast laptop (from work) with 2x USB 3.0 and 2x USB 2.0
- slower home laptop I used to test previously
- fast flashdrive Transcend Jetflash 780 16GB
- EMTEC Bluetooth with bluecore 4 (the same as previously) but now I have ordered recommended from DX http://dx.com/p/ultra-mini-bluetooth-2- ... ngle-37665

I divided flashdrive to 2 partitions, 1x ntfs visible to Windows and standard ext4 + swap for Ubuntu.
I put Ubuntu 13.04 to Flash Drive (not live USB but full upgradeable installation) and installed GIMX.
Note: Flashdrive has to be put to USB 3.0 port and no other USB device should be connected to other USB 3.0 port to avoid hardware lags.

I can confirm system works flawlessly from USB - no lags, no hangups, everything is perfect.
Unfortunately GIMX works more or less the same as before - works fine for some time and suddenly gets lags or unresponsive. I suspect it's BT dongle's issue.
As I want to exclude every possible hardware lags, I suspect my bluetooth is faulty so here goes my question:

Is that Bluetooth from DX http://dx.com/p/ultra-mini-bluetooth-2- ... ngle-37665 still recommended and works longer than 10 minutes without lags? As I'm waiting for it to be shipped :D ?
What version/distribution of linux/ubuntu is tested and recommended for GIMX?

Is Ubuntu 13.04 tested and OK?
Ubuntu 11.04 ?
Ubuntu 12.10 ?
x32? x64 ?
Some other distro maybe?

I'm hoping to get GIMX finally in working order.

As told on the wiki, the recommended distro is the latest Ubuntu version.

The only way to get rid of the bluetooth issues is to build a USB adapter.
