How do you choose the right postal codes database for your needs?

Hi all,
I’m looking into using a postal codes database for a small project, and I’m realizing there are more options out there than I expected—some open-source, some commercial, and all with slightly different levels of detail.
I’m wondering how people here choose the right one for their use case. For example, if you’re doing something like delivery zone planning, localized marketing, or regional analytics, what matters most? Accuracy? Update frequency? Extra metadata like latitude/longitude?
Also, are there major differences between national and global datasets, beyond just size? I’ve seen some services claim “worldwide” coverage, but it’s hard to verify how complete or trustworthy that really is.
Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences—what worked, what didn’t, and where to start.
Thanks in advance!
