Building my own GIMX adapter

Hey everyone,

Apologies if this is a ridiculous question... Seems that there is no ETA on GIMX adapters being back in stock, as such is it worth building one?

Not much of a hobbyist when it comes to electronics, programming etc so is this going to be too difficult a task or is it worth giving it a go?

Any links to parts for UK?

Thanks in advance.

Hey there.
Here are the parts needed.
Yes i say it is worth making your own adapter. There is a satisfaction making them. 3 wires are needed to be soldered.
It is easily done if you have a small tip solder iron. Flux is your friend when soldering small component.

USB 2.0 to TTL UART CP2104

Arduinio Pro Micro 5V ATmega32U4

Hey Ckaiy,

Thanks for the response, am I right in thinking that if I get a board with pins no soldering will be required?
Furthermore, am I wrong in thinking that you need to specifically use a Teensy 2.0 board?

Thanks.

Yes you dont need to solder, but you might get problems with the adapter when the connection is not perfect.
Buy the two parts i linked you and your good to go.
Teensy 2.0 is the old version.

Uart cp2104 and any ATMEGA32U4 board is the way to go ;)

Only thing you need to know is this.
The 3 wires need to be soldered like this.
Uart - Atmega32u4
GND - GND
Tx - Rx
Rx - Tx

Tin the wire ends. Stick them into the corresponded holes above ;) and solder.
Done.

Connect the uart and Atmega32 board inte pc usb ports.
Install Gimx. Launch Gimx launcher - Help - Update Firmware.

Gimx loader - choose firmware.
When prompted - Unplug/replug uart or if it does not work try again with unplug/replug AVR side.

If all goes well you are done.

No. Current gimx versions supports only atmega32u4.

No, you can NOT. It depends on the type of adapter you are using, but current versions only support ATmega32U4.
