Joystick not found (G25 + PS4 + RPi 3 B + TIAO GBoard)

Post by newk86 »

NOTE: Separate thread created to address specific issue rather than hijacking other thread.

Also, full disclosure in case it matters, my wheel is technically a Fanatec GT3 RS V2 which is running in Logitech G25 emulation mode. I am just calling it a G25 to keep it simple, and the same wheel I have gotten to work on PS4 via GIMX on Windows and using the G25_G29 config before too. Just now in Raspberry/Linux seem to be having trouble.

I am very new to RPi and Linux. I am giving it a go since I managed to find one for pretty cheap and is also a way more practical solution than moving my PC every time I want to use my wheel.

First thing I tried was this pre-prepared image from http://www.steve-marton.com/gimx/?p=180

Didn't go too well and here is the error message I got if anyone can make sense of it:

Code: Select all

root@DietPi:~# /usr/bin/gimx -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -c LogitechG25_G29.xml --nograb
controller #1: option -p with value `/dev/ttyUSB0'
now reading arguments for controller #2
global option -c with value `LogitechG25_G29.xml'
grab flag is unset
../common/posix/async.c:196 async_read_timeout: select failed with error: No such file or directory
can't read packet header
gimx.c:208 main: no adapter detected
Next thing I tried was installing just a regular RPi OS on the SD card instead. I believe it is called Raspbian, and luckily this was a bit more familiar to me with a full GUI etc like on Windows. No luck with GIMX though and here is the log showing particular error.

Code: Select all

Following the advice from Matlo, I then attempted to downgrade the firmware as per https://gimx.fr/wiki/index.php?title=RP ... are_update

I copied and pasted the command exactly, waited, rebooted, and am reasonably sure everything completed correctly. Unfortunately still no luck with GIMX reporting the same error as before but I did notice 2 things that were weirdly different though:

1. My G25 wheel is now showing up as a "Logitech, Inc. Driving Force" device whereas before it was a "Logitech, Inc. G25 Racing Wheel"
2. My browser doesn't work anymore on the Pi. I had to copy the GIMX log onto a USB drive and post it online from my PC instead. You can see the new log below.

So since the problem has been narrowed down to I believe the wheel itself (adapter ok), I came up with a few thoughts or possible solutions.

1. Perhaps I could try a bunch more different Rasbian versions or downgrades etc and hopefully come across one that works.

2. Could the problem lie in the order in which I am plugging things in or turning things on? Doubtful though maybe, as the wheel is showing up on the connected devices list at least, just not in GIMX.

3. Would checking if the wheel is working via Windows + GIMX again be helpful? Just to make sure I mean and rule out any issue with the hardware. Anyways I will definitely look at trying this again this week (end goal to have the identical setup working properly via the Pi though of course).

4. Another idea; could disabling the ethernet on the Pi be another thing to try? I believe I may have heard mention of ethernet possibly conflicting with the USB ports on occasion.

5. I found the following support thread https://gimx.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5 ... ick#p10887 which deals with similar hardware. Sounds like the problem this user was having was ultimately solved by using different cables? For what it's worth my RPi is not being powered by an official adapter, rather by a 'quick' USB phone charger. I haven't seen a power warning symbol at all during use though, and ideally I would prefer not having to spend more money on an official adapter if I can avoid it. I will though if deemed necessary. I'm not sure on the quality of my other cables but pretty sure the one on the wheel at least is official.

I will look into some of this and report back at times during the week. Of course any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,

The problem is probably due to a device name mistmatch.
Fanatec wheels behave slightly differently, which results in a different device name.
Try replacing all device names with "HID 046d:c299" in your configuration.

If the device still appears as a DFGT, try setting the G25 mode again on a PC.

Sorry to anybody following; I only just got around to trying this again tonight. Unfortunately issues still remain though. Thanks Matlo for the tip, I went about editing my G25 config as follows:

Still on the latest RPi firmware, I then tried the following in order:

- Turned on the RPi
- Plugged the wheel into the RPi, turned on the wheel and set it to G25 emulation mode
- Plugged one side of the TAIO into the PS4
- Plugged the other side into the Pi
- Turned on my PS4 via controller
- Turned off the controller
- Plugged the controller into the RPi and then pressed the PS button to turn the controller on again
- Opened GIMX, set edited config, and clicked start GIMX
- Tried using the wheel a bit on PS4 desktop with no response. Figured was no good so closed GIMX and received following log (trimmed the end of it also so not as long):

To me this looks more promising because at least the wheel is showing up now and seemingly registering inputs. Just with no response at all from the PS4. Hopefully somebody can make sense of it all.

Also, I haven't been able to try anything else yet but tomorrow I hope to try this newly created G25 config again but maybe again with the downgraded Pi firmware. The only reason I didn't try this today today was because of my wheel registering as a Driving Force on the old firmware which I'm not sure about, plus just not enough time unfortunately.

You actually have to press the PS button to activate the controller.

Thanks Matlo. I was sure that I had pressed the button but I tried again yesterday with a different controller cable and this time I got a response. The wheel picked up on the PS4 menu! I was able to browse and select things on the menu and used it to open Driveclub VR. I think I celebrated a bit early though because once I started racing I could control the vehicle using turning and pedals etc but there was no force feedback at all.

Unfortunately I was unable to post a log file this time because I kept getting interrupted. I will hopefully be able to do this tonight though but just posting now to update on progress.

Downgrade the firmware as you did earlier.

Hi, I'm back after many months! I never did get around to making this work unfortunately. Just so, so lazy.

I'm back at the task now though. It seems that the https://gimx.fr/wiki/index.php?title=RPi link has changed a bit, I can no longer find the command to downgrade the firmware.

I did try
sudo rpi-update 771a503cfc2a1130e2df2a4ddfc45ffa0f592b3f
sudo reboot
as is suggested there now, but when I try "sudo unae -a" I don't get
Linux raspberrypi 4.1.21+ #873 Mon Apr 11 18:00:37 BST 2016 armv6l GNU/Linux
as I assume is expected, but instead something slightly different:
Linux raspberrypi 4.1.21-v7+ #873 SMP Mon Apr 11 18:22:10 BST 2016 armv7l GNU/Linux
So I'm wondering if the rpi-update string on the wiki is slightly wrong? In any case, with how things are my wheel detects but only four of the buttons work and mostly in the wrong places. Will continue to update and try and get a hold of latest log file. Cheers.

Also, perhaps it would be handy to include a link to the recommended version of Raspbian to install on the Rpi wiki. I installed 2016-05-10-raspbian-jessie.img from http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/raspbian/images/, and then proceeded to downgrade (I think what it's doing is downgrading) via the following command enterered in terminal:

sudo rpi-update 771a503cfc2a1130e2df2a4ddfc45ffa0f592b3f
sudo reboot

to get me to my current point.

What's the behavior with this older firmware?
