Why is this better than a converter?

GIMX is a converter. It converts all your PC inputs into a PS3 input.
The bt version emulates a sixaxis (it tries to behave as close as possible as a sixaxis), and the usb version works as a generic joystick.
Emulating a sixaxis brings a better compatibility with games as it is the official PS3 controller.

More power because you have a computer.
And more customizability.
Macro support.
More memory for multiple key mappings.
And more fluid.
But the Xim3 is still the closest you can get to 1:1 pc.
but only works good with the xbox 360.

Basically all commercial converters are crap at translating, and offer very limited customization.

I know that gimx works better then the eagle eye I tested gimx and eagle and definitely like gimx better because the movement is more fluent not jagged especially when sprinting and turning angles Eagle Eye seems to jitter alot and Eagle eye does not allow you to set multiple customization so if your normal movement is fast your ADS will still be litterally slow and auto assist will become a pain instead of assisting you. Auto assist actually make it impossible to move the mouse but fails to correctly aim at the target it will aim very near the target only.
