Just to make sure I understand:
1) I should have both ends of the DIY USB Adapter connected to my PC
2) Run GIMX
3) Run jstest-gtk
4) Make sure that GIMX commands are being seen in jstest-gtk
I won't do anything until you confirm, just to make sure I don't burn anything up.

Okay, ran that and I see nothing in the jstest-gtk window.
Does this mean that my Teensy went bad just sitting on my desk?

Maybe something went wrong in the firmware update.
Try to load it again, and make sure to pick the right one (firmwares-4.1/EMUPS3/atmega32u4.hex).

I reloaded the Teensy firmware, making sure that it was the correct one, and it had no affect.
Looking at the PJRC site, I see that there are sometimes issues with the Teensy loading correctly.
http://www.pjrc.com/teensy/troubleshoot.html
I followed the instructions there for "Teensy Not Recognized by Teensy Loader" and still have the same issues.
I posted on the PJRC forums to see if there is a way to reset the Teensy back to "As New" condition, just to see if it is possible to clear out the programming before trying to load the 4.1 firmware again.

You can also try the joystick-serial firmware, it had less changes than the EMUPS3 one. EDIT: It doesn't work.

Downgrading both the software and the firmware may also help to see if the problem is due to the updates or not.
To uninstall gimx, type in a terminal:

If I uninstall GIMX, where do I get the older version software & firmware to reinstall for testing?
UPDATE:
I cleared the GIMX firmware out of the Teensy by loading the LED Blink program back into it. I then reloaded the GIMX 4.1 firmware (firmwares-4.1\EMUPS3\atmega32u4.hex).
I then reconnected everything as you instructed to test GIMX output with jstest-gtk.
I ran GIMX & jstest-gtk and saw nothing in the jstest-gtk window.
I stopped GIMX to regain control of mouse/keyboard and clicked the <Refresh> button in the jstest-gtk window just to see if it did anything.
I got a picture of a joystick with the following text:
Sony PLAYSTATION(R)3 Controller
Device: /dev/input/js0
Axes: 27
Buttons: 19
That was an improvement.
I ran GIMX from the command line. I saw the commands in the GIMX window, but nothing in the jstest-gtk window.
I stopped GIMX again and clicked on <Properties> in the jstest-gtk window. This opened another window which looked like it would show what I was looking for.
I restarted GIMX from the command line again and went through all of the Keys & Mouse movements.
YAY! I see things happening!!! Every key press or mouse movement causes a slider to move or a box to light up.
So, I shut everything down, disconnect all the cables, reconnect everything to the PS3, fire up GIMX, and it doesn't work.
What can I try next?
EDIT: Just to make sure, I tried both USB ports on the PS3. GIMX does not work on either of them. A wired PS controller works on both.

Reloaded GIMX 3.5.1, reinstalled firmware 3.0, and everything runs fine now. YAY!!!
Obviously, I would like to run the latest version of GIMX but there is an issue somewhere.
Is it possible that removing GIMX 3.5.1 and then installing 4.2 from scratch would have a different result than allowing the 4.2 update to run on top of the older installation?
Is it possible that I screwed something up when I tried to run 4.2 with the 3.0 firmware still installed on the Teensy?
I am completely willing to remove/reinstall software & firmware as needed now that I know I can revert back to older versions so simply and have everything work. Please, let me know if there is anything I can do to help figure this out.
What can I do for you to help find the trouble and resolve it?
